The United States Fish and Wildlife Service listed the Orangutan (Pongo Pygmaeus) as an endangered species on June 2, 1970 where it remains today. It is estimated there are fewer than 100,000 Orangutans in the wild today with over half of their population lost over the last 60 years. Orangutans are thought to be killed at a rate of 2000 - 3000 annually putting them on the path to be extinct in the next 50 years.
