The United States Fish and Wildlife Service listed the African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) on the endangered or threatened species on June 11, 1978 where it remains today. Elephants are the largest land mammals in the world, the bull (male) elephant can weight more than 13,000 lbs. In the 1990's the African elephant population dropped by almost 50%. The United States implemented a near total ban on commercially trading ivory from African elephants in 2016.
